I don’t know if I’ve linked to this video before. I think I probably have, but I find it fascinating and re-watch it occasionally. “J.J. Abrams’s Mystery Box” is a 20-minute TEDTalk by the filmmaker J.J. Abrams, creator of the TV shows Lost, Alias, and Fringe (and more), and director of the feature films Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek and Super 8. In the video...

Films about the past, from 2011:
Midnight in Paris is about rejecting nostalgia - taking inspiration from the past, but not seeking to relive it. Learn and improve the world you live in. Hugo was a celebration of one of the great innovators of cinema. Someone who pushed the art form forward. It was set in the past, but it was about progress and originality. The Artist sympathises with someone who refuses to stay up to date with...

infinitybutton's 365 films
finlidan: LOOK AT WHAT I DID INSTEAD OF ACTUAL WORK!!! I put all of David’s 365 Films: 2012 movie reviews in the grid thinger SO CLICK HERE AND ADMIRE MY HARD WORK (spoiler alert: it wasn’t that hard) But the person who did the real hard work is David because he is actually doing this challenge and isn’t that far behind. He is a better person than all of us. Look what nice friends I have!...

And another omission from last night’s big post on female directors: Miranda July. I haven’t seen either of her films, but I really want to. Although she infamously does so many things that it’s difficult to pick one to describe her.

Addendum to previous ramble: 1. Apologies to Sofia Coppola. I really like LOST IN TRANSLATION. Haven’t seen any of her other movies. 2. Diablo Cody is making her directorial debut this year (in addition to writing the reboots of both SWEET VALLEY HIGH and THE EVIL DEAD (what a combo)). JUNO is a fantastic film, and her script for YOUNG ADULT (directed by Juno director Jason Reitman) has...

RE: female directors
In general, nobody gets an Oscar nomination until you’ve had a career of a certain length; and then when you’ve made a film that has some commercial success in a genre that the academy typically favours. Kathryn Bigelow is an exception to the rule about female directors partially because she is an exceptional director. One of the best working today. But although many will not have...

– The Oscars’ woman problem - Oscars - Salon.com (via ronmarks) Ok, I totally understand this and it frustrates me as well, especially as a young woman who would ultimately like to have a career in the film industry. However, the thing is, is that there are simply not as many female directors out...

seloftheearth: I deal with a lot of white people. Some of these white people are straight up racist. Some of them are less racist than others (but still racist). While I obviously have a huge problem with the overtly racist people I deal with, I am not hurt by them because they do not matter to me. I do not…

Reasons not to be worried about the Oscars really...
At the 2006 awards, Paul Haggis’s “some people are racist and others are just mean but everybody can work together” travesty of mediocrity, Crash, won best film. The vastly superior Brokeback Mountain won Best Director; Spielberg’s excellent thriller Munich won nothing. But here’s a list of some of the films better than any of those which were not nominated for Best...

finlidan replied to your post: can we please be considerate about set photos or other spoilers of things which aren’t even wrapped yet. tumblr savior ‘spoiler’ or something DAVID GOD hey yeah except at least 80% of posts aren’t tagged properly. I know I’m guilty of it, but I’m also careful to not post spoilers for anything, even 70-year-old movies. Even if a post is tagged...

Once things have been broadcast/released, yeah, it’s about discretion. But PLEASE, can we not fill tumblr with unofficial spoilery photos? YEAH I GET THAT IT’S EXCITING TO SEE THAT STAR TREK 2 IS HAPPENING, but you can be excited without showing people who don’t want to see anything yet. Please be considerate. Not everyone wants spoilers. Thanks.
