54. Tyrannosaur (dir. Paddy Considine, UK, 2011)
A violent loner (Peter Mullan) develops a friendship with a Christian charity shop owner (Olivia Colman).
This film is extraordinary. The subject matter is not unique in British cinema; domestic abuse and alcoholism are par for the course for movies in the UK. What truly elevates Tyrannosaur to be - I think - one of the best British films of recent years is that nothing about this film feels forced in the slightest. Mullan and Colman’s performances were both incredible. Considine, a first-time writer-director, really sells it wonderfully. No handheld camera. Everything on rails.
