Reasons not to be worried about the Oscars really meaning anything
At the 2006 awards, Paul Haggis’s “some people are racist and others are just mean but everybody can work together” travesty of mediocrity, Crash, won best film. The vastly superior Brokeback Mountain won Best Director; Spielberg’s excellent thriller Munich won nothing.
But here’s a list of some of the films better than any of those which were not nominated for Best Film at all:
- Brick
- Caché (Hidden) [almost certainly the best film released in 2005, but not even nominated for Best Foreign language)
- The Constant Gardener
- A History of Violence
- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
- Mysterious Skin
- The New World
- No Direction Home
- Serenity
That’s just the ones I’ve seen. All of those are so much better than Crash. Most of them are better than Brokeback, good as it was.
